Festival selections – June recap

// 2025-07-08

So many festivals, we can hardly keep up with sharing the news!

The 17th Solanin Film Festival has announced its lineup - this time we’ll be represented by one short fiction film and two documentaries. At the end of August, we’ll be showing:
  • “Podorozhnyk” / “Plantago”, directed by Maryna Suslovets - two Ukrainian children try to survive under Russian occupation. A powerful story that’s winning over more and more festival programmers - don’t miss it!

  • “Mum”, directed by Jan Ziewiecki - a documentary portraying the bond between a daughter and her aging mother, whose memory is slowly fading. Memories return in fleeting moments - a song, a rhyme, a seemingly simple conversation. The film was honored with the prestigious Premio Ermanno Olmi.
  • “Submarine”, directed by Oliwia Zakrzewska - a moving story of a single mother battling postpartum depression. Recognized at last year’s Żubroffka and premiered internationally in Kraków’s competition. If you missed "Submarine" at Tofifest, make sure to get your ticket to Solanin!

We also know the lineup for the Przeźrocza Documentary Film Festival. In the "Błysk Oka" short film competition, "Dancing King" by Igor Kuna will be taking part. Mr. Bronisław Pisarski, the film’s protagonist who runs a disco in Skarżysko-Kamienna, will be dancing his way to the Bydgoszcz festival at the end of August.

"Like All the Others" / "Wie all die Anderen" (dir. Max Bommas), previously shown at Flickers’ Rhode Island FF and EnergaCAMERIMAGE, traveled last weekend to Cyprus, where it was screened at the Paphos International Film Festival. Congratulations to Max on yet another screening!

Attendees of the Queer Cinema in the Elevator event, held for the second time at Gdańsk’s Archipelago of Culture, had the chance to watch "My Old Gals", directed by Natasza Parzymies, just before the weekend. We’re happy to see Natasza’s film continuing to be part of Pride Month celebrations.

We’re also proud to share the success of the two-minute short "The Fish", directed by Jan Górecki. This concise and humorous exam film has been screened at several festivals, winning over audiences with its minimalistic style and charm. "The Fish" has swum its way to:
  • Capri, Hollywood - The International Film Festival 2024
  • Valencia Indie Film Festival • VALÈIFF 2025
  • Positively Different Short Film Festival 2025
  • 13th Showreel: Effat International Student Film Festival 2025
"The Fish" can be seen at the Elektronik Cinema before every screening - you’re all invited!

Last but not least - the first-year film "Let it burn" by Piotr Bakuła, a second-year directing student, is heading to festivals in Brazil and Norway.

Mostra Livre De Cinema (São Paulo, Brazil)

NUFF - The Nordic Youth Film Festival (Tromsø, Norway)

This dramatic story follows a girl with cerebral palsy who, in a sudden crisis, must rise above her limitations. Now embarking on its festival journey, the film is diving straight into deep waters! We’re keeping our fingers crossed for Piotr and his team.

We could write endlessly about the successes of our students. Congratulations to all the creators!
